A Proven Therapy Program for Thumb Sucking
Seminars ~ Workshops ~ Classes

I have been in private practice for over thirty-eight years. For the last eleven years I have been teaching at the University of Detroit Mercy College an introductory course on Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders to first year Orthodontic students. In addition I have given many table clinics, lectures and seminars to Dentists, Orthodontists, and SpeechChristine Mills Pathologists. I have also been a consultant to speech pathologists in the public schools, dealing with speech therapy issues and orofacial myofunctional disorders. In addition to conducting group seminars and private lectures on a "per request" basis, I offer two formal courses. Continuing Education Units are available.

The first is a four day 28 hour IAOM Introductory Course:
Orofacial Myofuncional Disorders - Rest Posture Therapy.

The second is a two day 14 hour course on thumb/digit/finger sucking:
Thumb Sucking: Chronic to Normal, Awareness - Education - Treatment
.

Attendee Testimonials

Cindy Wrote:
“I am very pleased I came to this course with Chris as the instructor.  We got a great variety of teaching methods with video’s, actual us of therapy tools, etc.  Very well organized.   Very educational.  I definitely enjoyed the hands on because it taught me how to do things.  The course exceeded my expectations.“

Stacy Wrote:
“This course was excellent and I would be proud to recommend this introductory course to my fellow colleagues.  Excellent and very pleased with the course.  The information was given clearly and concisely.  I liked both and enjoyed gaining knowledge but do enjoy hands on activities more.  I loved the question/answer period.   The part of the course I liked most was the case presentations, seeing how techniques are applied in real life clients. I also liked that you were so accommodating and extremely interested in helping us to succeed.  I would most definitely be interested in taking future courses. I am forever grateful and was extremely satisfied with the entire program.”

Keisha Wrote:
“Very professional, very knowledgeable, we were very well taken care of.  The information I received was very clear and concise.  I liked the hands on discussion-demonstrations best.  The behavior modification exercises and examples of what has worked for you and the client with all the positive feedback it just makes sense to me especially as a parent we know what usually works and what doesn’t.  I was pleased with the whole course.   It was full of great information and I learned a lot.  I would be interested in taking future courses as long as you are teaching them.”

The course objective is to identify, compare and evaluate normal sucking patterns to chronic sucking patterns.  The attendee will be shown how to analyze, diagnose, and discuss the dynamics of a chronic sucking pattern, understand why this pattern becomes detrimental to normal growth and development of the orofacial structure.  The consequences thumb sucking may have on the individual will be examined and discussed.

This two day course covers:

The detrimental effects of prolonged thumb sucking with regard to the growth and development of the child’s oro-facial structure.

Consequences thumb sucking may have on self-esteem, socialization, and learning.

Identify, diagnose and evaluate normal sucking patterns and compare them to chronic sucking patterns

Analysis of academic practices, treatment regimes, therapeutic protocols

The multidisciplinary connection between, dental, speech and orofacial myofunctional therapy

Primary Objective - successfully treat and eliminate chronic thumb sucking patterns.

The participant will be provided with the clinical and practical application of a therapeutic regime, to examine, evaluate, and discuss the multidisciplinary connection between, dental, speech, and orofacial myofunctional therapy.  The primary goal of this two day course is to provide an awareness, education, and treatment protocol to successfully discuss, treat, and eliminate chronic thumb sucking patterns.  The importance of ethical procedures and conduct in which the IAOM association and qualified participating therapists embrace will also be stressed.
